Who I am

My name is Fabio Curtis. I am a Brazilian artist, born in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and I come from a family of Italian immigrants. My surname, however, has English origins. As a child, I attended a Catholic school where my father had also studied. Thanks to my parents' dedication and efforts, I received an excellent education and learned many valuable lessons at that institution. From a very early age, I developed a strong interest in art and music. In fact, when I was just seven years old, I took part as a percussionist in the school's symphonic band. A few years later, I completed my education at a state school in the city. By the age of eighteen, in the mid-1980s, I had already developed a passion for drawing. I created a character called Plass Modiun and came up with the idea of printing the character on a few T-shirts and selling them to my school friends. I never imagined that this little project would become a business. I had no particular ambition to make a great deal of money; I simply found the whole experience enjoyable. However, sales gradually increased, and before long I had another idea: to turn the character into a registered brand specialising in surfwear and skatewear. We eventually developed a complete product range, including T-shirts, shorts, caps, jeans and various accessories. I began introducing the brand to small local shops, and within just two years, it had expanded throughout Brazil and even reached other countries, including Portugal. I also organised several fashion shows to promote the brand. My mother wisely managed the administrative side of the business and was always there to support me. I owe her a great deal, as I could never have achieved what I did without her help. My father subsequently opened a shop under the brand's name, and I went on to establish several more outlets in towns across the state of Sao Paulo. The brand remained active for approximately ten years, after which I decided to pursue other directions in life. In 1996, I married a woman of Japanese descent whom I had met at one of my shops. This relationship brought about an opportunity to fulfil another long-held dream: forming a rock band. My wife and I decided to become a musical duo. I enrolled at a drum school, and thanks to my natural aptitude and rapid progress, I soon began teaching drums at a music school in Sao Paulo. My marriage also gave me the opportunity to travel to Japan on four separate occasions. During my time there, I worked in the warehouse department at Sony. In my spare time, I volunteered to help newly arrived Brazilian residents with everyday matters, such as grocery shopping, obtaining official documents, organising house moves and various other practical needs. I spent a total of three years living in Japan. It was an incredibly enriching experience, allowing me to learn about the language, culture and traditions of the Japanese people. After eleven years of marriage, we eventually divorced due to irreconcilable differences. I must admit that I went through a very difficult period, suffering from deep depression for approximately three years. Thankfully, that chapter of my life eventually came to an end. One of the things that helped me most throughout that difficult period was my faith in the biblical teachings I had learned at the Catholic school I attended as a child. I have never forgotten a small Gospel booklet that one of my teachers gave me. She wrote a personal dedication inside it, which read: “Walk the right path, and God will help you.” I am not a religious person in the conventional sense, but I have a personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ. I could share thousands of testimonies and experiences of faith that I have encountered throughout my life, but that would be a very long story. For this reason, I have documented much of this journey in my autobiography, entitled Free Heart, which has already reached its fourth edition. In 2008, I managed to put together my first rock and reggae band, called Surfista de Cristo (Surfer of Christ). We performed at churches, pubs and local festivals throughout the city. Through these musical activities, I also began organising my own events, most of which were charity initiatives aimed at helping people in need. We organised collections of food for disadvantaged families, toys for children, animal food, products for expectant mothers and support for various other social causes. In 2009, the band changed its name to NO THANXS. From that point onwards, the other musicians and I decided to focus exclusively on rock music. During this period, we received considerable media exposure, appearing in several television reports and newspaper articles. We continued performing until 2012, when I was offered an opportunity to travel to the United States by an American pastor named Dennis Walker. He invited me to attend the Dunamis Resource Center in Las Vegas, where I could study and deepen my understanding of the Bible. While there, I also met another Brazilian pastor, Israel Silva, who gave me the opportunity to work for his small cleaning company. Through this experience, I learned a great deal more about Christian faith and values. In my spare time, I continued pursuing music. I performed at music shops and pubs throughout Las Vegas, gave drum lessons at a church and taught private students. I also had the opportunity to perform in Mexico City. I remained in Las Vegas until the middle of 2014. Upon returning to Brazil later that year, I had several original songs that I had written myself, and I decided it was time to record them professionally. My first album featured eight songs, three of which were recorded in collaboration with a Canadian singer named Isabelle Laparre, whom I had met at a casino in Las Vegas. This album marked the beginning of a new chapter in my musical career and gave rise to the name of my band: JESUSHED. The band began performing at both small and large festivals throughout Sao Paulo, while I continued organising voluntary events to support people in need. In 2022, I travelled to Yorkshire to attend an intensive one-month English language course. During that trip, I also had the opportunity to film a music video for my band in Edinburgh, working alongside a Scottish street performer. In 2023, I received an invitation from a Californian organisation called Extreme Tour to take part in a tour across the United Kingdom. Their work is also based on social engagement and voluntary initiatives, very much in keeping with the values behind my own projects. The organisation helped me with accommodation, transport and meals. To cover some of my other expenses, I sold merchandise such as T-shirts, CDs and band accessories. The musicians who accompanied me during the performances came from the United States and Wales. I spent three months taking part in this project, travelling and performing across the UK. It was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to connect with different musicians, audiences and communities. In 2025, I received an award in London from a British company called Heavy Music Artwork. The recognition came through my participation in an interview book featuring 70 metal bands from different parts of the world. As my family has roots in the Tuscany region of Italy, I also took the opportunity to travel there and record a new music video for one of my Portuguese-language songs, entitled A Teia (The Web). Today, I continue to develop my musical project, JESUSHED. I have released more than 60 original songs, all written by me, which are available on various digital streaming platforms. However, I am also looking for new opportunities and alternative paths for the future. The musical style I represent is not part of mainstream Brazilian culture, which makes it particularly challenging to reach a wider audience and gain recognition for my work in my own country. Alongside my artistic career, I currently run a small, themed burger restaurant in my hometown called Gibb's Rock Burger. I personally prepare the burgers, sweets and drinks, all of which are handmade. Unfortunately, my current rental agreement is due to expire in February 2027. The property owner intends to put the building up for sale, which means that I will need to find a new direction and reconsider my professional future. At this stage of my life, I find myself at another crossroads. I have experienced different cultures, built businesses from scratch, travelled internationally, performed music in several countries, organised charitable projects and overcome some very challenging personal circumstances. I believe that every experience, whether positive or difficult, has contributed to shaping the person and artist I am today. I remain passionate about music, creativity, entrepreneurship and helping others. I am open to new opportunities, collaborations and challenges that will allow me to continue growing, sharing my work and making a meaningful contribution to the world. My journey is far from over.
